Tiny clown killi for quiet, planted nano aquariums with a secure lid
Epiplatys annulatus 1.5–2 cm (Epiplatys annulatus), commonly known as the clown killi, is a miniature surface-dwelling fish with striking bands and colourful fins. At 1.5–2 cm these are very young specimens that will reach about 3–3.5 cm as adults. This species is part of our freshwater range and is ideal for quiet, densely planted nano aquariums with a tight-fitting cover.
Epiplatys annulatus is a very peaceful, shy schooling fish that should be kept in a group (at least 6–8 fish). It spends most of its time in the upper water layers, among floating plants and at the surface.
We recommend at least 20–30 litres for a small group, in a calm tank with gentle flow and soft filtration. A secure lid is essential, as these fish are excellent jumpers. Use starter bacteria when cycling the tank and monitor water quality with our water tests. Best kept with other tiny, peaceful species or in a species-only setup.
The clown killi is a micro-predatory insectivore, feeding mainly on small invertebrates. In the aquarium, offer:
Vary the diet using our foods for small tropical fish and feed 2–3 small meals per day, ensuring food stays near the surface or midwater.
This species comes from soft, slightly acidic water and is sensitive to sudden changes and nitrite spikes. Before adding fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Provide gentle, well-matured filtration and maintain the tank using our maintenance tools and small weekly water changes.
Set up a heavily planted aquarium with many live plants (stem plants, mosses, fine roots) and especially floating plants to diffuse the light and provide cover.
A dark substrate will enhance their colours, while a soft to moderate lighting system prevents stress. Choose smooth decorations without sharp edges.
