Haplochromis nyererei (4-6 cm)

Cichlid jewel of Lake Victoria - spectacular sheen in males

Haplochromis nyererei is one of the most colourful cichlids on Lake Victoria. Much sought-after by aquarists for its fiery red, yellow and violet **reflections in the males**, it is also fascinating for its territorial and dynamic **behaviour**.

Behaviour & maintenance

This cichlid has :

  • A territorial temperament, especially in adult males
  • A marked social hierarchy - recommended ratio: 1 male to 2-3 females
  • Highly active: it likes to swim in open water and defend rocky areas.
We recommend keeping it in a special Victoria aquarium or with other robust, non-aggressive cichlids.

Diet

Omnivorous with carnivorous tendencies:

  • High-quality pellets for African cichlids
  • Supplements: artemia, krill, daphnia
  • Avoid food that is too rich in fat or soft plants
A varied diet improves health and intensifies colour.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 27°C
  • pH: 7.5 - 8.2
  • GH: 8 - 16 °dGH
  • KH : 6 - 12 °KH
  • Conductivity: 200 - 400 µS

This cichlid likes hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water. An external filter is strongly recommended.

Decor & environment

Choose :

  • Rocks and boulders to mark out territories
  • Neutral sand or fine substrate
  • Strong lighting to enhance the metallic reflections of the males
Recommended volume: 200 L minimum for a trio (1 male + 2 females).
