Julidochromis ornatus "Yellow" Uvira F1

Dwarf Tanganyika cichlid - bright yellow and territorial, ideal for rocky aquariums

Julidochromis ornatus "Yellow" is a bright, localised variant of Julidochromis from theUvira region in the north of Lake Tanganyika. This F1 strain (direct offspring of ferals) is highly prized for its intense yellow colour contrasted by dark stripes.

This small, territorial cichlid, loyal to its partner, is perfect for the rocky biotope aquariums of Tanganyika. It forms long-lasting pairs and breeds easily in captivity if the conditions are right.

Behaviour & maintenance

The Julidochromis ornatus is :

  • Territorial towards congeners or intruders close to the spawning site
  • Discreet, often faithful to a rocky hiding place
  • Calm with other species in Tanganyika (if it has its own territory)
To keep :
  • In pairs in a tank of 80 litres or more
  • Or as a trio in a well-structured tank of at least 120 litres

Feeding

Carnivore / insectivore:

  • Artemia, daphnia, bloodworms (live or frozen)
  • Protein-rich pellets, special cichlid flakes
Feed 1 to 2 times a day, with portions adapted to its small size and moderate appetite.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 28°C
  • pH: 7.8 - 9.2
  • GH: 10 - 20 °dGH
  • KH : 7 - 12 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 - 450 µS

The alkaline and stable conditions of Lake Tanganyika are essential. Use suitable salts if you are using osmosis water.

Decor & environment

Reproduce a dense rocky setting with limestone, slate or stacked rocks. Multiple hiding places are essential for successful cohabitation. Avoid sharp substrates: opt for fine sand. Optional plants (e.g. fixed Anubias).
