Julidochromis transcriptus

Small Tanganyika cichlid - discreet, territorial and very elegant

Julidochromis transcriptus is a dwarf cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, easily recognised by its streamlined body with black stripes. It is calm but territorial, and generally forms stable pairs. It is a perfect species for aquarists wishing to recreate a rocky Tanganyika biotope in a reasonable volume.

Behaviour & maintenance

This Julidochromis is a territorial fish , discreet and loyal to its shelter. It is best to keep it :

  • in pairs in an aquarium of at least 80 litres,
  • or in small groups only if the tank is very structured and spacious.
They thrive in rocky areas with plenty of hiding places (stacked rocks, pots, slates).

Feeding

Carnivorous with a tendency to eat insects:

  • Small live or frozen prey: artemia, daphnia, red worms, etc.
  • Protein-rich pellets and flakes
Feed in small quantities, several times a day if possible. Avoid excessively fatty or vegetable foods.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 28°C
  • pH: 7.8 - 9.0
  • GH: 10 - 20 °dGH
  • KH : 7 - 12 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 - 450 µS

This cichlid requires hard, alkaline water. We recommend reconstituting the typical parameters of Lake Tanganyika with appropriate mineral salts.

Decor & environment

Create a rocky setting with limestone or slate forming caves and crevices. Avoid fragile or demanding plants. A few Anubias or Vallisneria can complete the setting.
