Dwarf cichlid from Lake Malawi - a rare, peaceful variety adapted to rocky tanks
Labidochromis chizumulu "Same Bay" is a species endemic to Lake Malawi, discovered in Same Bay on the island of Chizumulu. This variety has a light colour with bluish or yellowish highlights, subtle markings and great elegance. F1s (first wild generation) are highly sought-after for their robustness and natural behaviour.
This Labidochromis is a relatively calm dwarf cichlid, particularly suited to rocky Malawi tanks. Territorial without being aggressive, it can live in a small group or harem (1 male + 2-3 females) in a tank of at least 200 litres. It cohabits well with other peaceful lake species (Neolamprologus, Cynotilapia, etc.), but avoid overly dominant species.
Omnivorous with a tendency to eat insects, it feeds on small invertebrates, algae, biofilm and plankton. They readily accept floating pellets, flakes, spirulina and meat. Vary the diet to avoid deficiencies and boost colour.
Labidochromis chizumulu requires water that is highly mineralised, alkaline and well filtered. Add specific Malawi mineral salts if your water is too soft.
This cichlid likes piles of rocks forming cavities, galleries and shady areas. Avoid plant-laden environments (which are unnatural for this species), but you can add a few Anubias attached to rocks. Fine sand is recommended as a substrate for natural behaviour.
