Neolamprologus cylindricus (5-6 cm)

Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika - slender shape and territorial behaviour

Neolamprologus cylindricus is a cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, much appreciated for its elongated silhouette, dark vertical stripes and typically territorial behaviour. It lives in shallow rocky areas, where it defends a cavity or crevice.

It is ideal for a Tanganyika biotope aquarium structured with stones, fine sand and clear observation areas. Cohabitation with other Tanganyika species should be carefully considered.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • Territorial and sometimes aggressive towards its congeners or similar species.
  • Can be kept in pairs or alone
  • Digs and defends its rocky territory
  • Spectacular behaviour during reproduction
Provide a very rocky setting with plenty of hiding places and visual escape zones.

Feeding

Opportunistic carnivore:

  • Sinking protein pellets
  • Artemia, krill, bloodworms (frozen or live)
  • Avoid foods that are too fatty or rich in vegetables.
Two to three moderate meals a day are enough.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 - 9.0
  • GH: 10 - 20 °dGH
  • KH : 8 - 15 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 - 350 µS

Maintaining a high pH and well mineralised water is essential.
