Pseudotropheus socolofi (7-8 cm)

Bright blue Mbuna from Lake Malawi - "Blue Socolofi

Pseudotropheus socolofi, sometimes also known as Chindongo socolofi, is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, renowned for its bright blue colour. It is a typical Mbuna that likes a rocky setting and a well-structured environment.

Behaviour & care

  • Active and fairly territorial: males may defend their area around rocks/sand.
  • Best kept in a group or harem (e.g. one male for several females) to limit conflict.
  • Can coexist with other Mbuna of similar size and temperament, but avoid species that are too peaceful or much smaller.

Diet

  • Omnivorous, mainly herbivorous: in the wild it grazes on biofilms and algae on rocks.
  • In the aquarium: give preference to spirulina-rich pellets or flakes, and limit high-protein foods to avoid digestive problems.
  • A small supplement of live or frozen food can be offered in moderation.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 22 - 26°C
  • pH: 7.5 - 8.5 (hard, alkaline water, as in Lake Malawi)
  • High hardness, robust but well-filtered and well-oxygenated water.

Setting & environment

  • Set in limestone or volcanic rock, with crevices and hiding places between sand and stones.
  • Suitable sandy soil or fine gravel, open areas for swimming and densely rocky areas for territories.
  • Recommended volume: around 150-200 L minimum for a group, with a length of around 120 cm as a good guide.

Aquabota tip

To take full advantage of the bright blue colouring of this Socolofi, use a dark or dark grey background and moderate lighting to highlight the metallic reflections. Make sure the tank is well cycled before introduction, and introduce the group at the same time to limit conflicts. Carry out regular water changes (~20% / week) and avoid adding species that are too lively or too aggressive, which could disturb this Mbuna.
