Rubricatochromis exsul (3-5 cm)

Red Jewel" cichlid from Lake Turkana - small but lively

Rubricatochromis exsul is a cichlid native to Lake Turkana (Kenya), remarkable for its intense red/orange colour and dark fins. Although small in size, it requires a well-structured aquarium and stable conditions.

Behaviour & care

  • Moderately territorial: may remain fairly peaceful compared with other jewels, but remains active and defends its territory.
  • Ideal in pairs or small young groups, in a suitable tank.
  • Swims rather close to the bottom or in a rocky setting with hiding places.

Diet

  • Omnivorous with carnivorous tendencies: accepts pellets, enriched flakes, frozen/live food (e.g. artemia, worms) to support the colour.
  • Varying the diet helps to achieve a bright red colour.

Water quality

  • Temperature: around 23 - 28°C.
  • pH: 7.0 - 8.5 (alkaline water) recommended.
  • Hardness: moderate to hard - suitable for Lake Turkana waters.

Decor & environment

  • Medium sand or gravel, rocky or lava backdrop, plenty of hiding places.
  • Recommended volume: for a couple or small group, a 100-litre tank is recommended to leave plenty of space and limit stress.
  • Avoid overly lively or aggressive species that could dominate them.
