Steatocranus casuarius (4-6cm)

Small medium-sized African cichlid: "Lionhead" with humped skull

Steatocranus casuarius is a rheophilous cichlid endemic to the Congo River basin, distinguished in particular by a pronounced cephalic hump in the male. When properly kept, this fish is both decorative and relatively affordable for an African cichlid enthusiast.

Behaviour & care

  • A rocky bottom / shallow water species, often with moderate to strong currents.
  • Territorial, especially in pairs or during reproduction: best to maintain a pair or sex correctly.
  • Does not swim like a typical fish: body adapted to watercourses, often swims "leaping" over the bottom.

Diet

Balanced omnivore:

  • Quality pellets for African cichlids.
  • Supplements: mysis, artemia, small worms, finely chopped crustaceans.
  • A little vegetable matter or algae is not a problem.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 28°C.
  • pH: 6.0 - 8.0 depending on decor and affinities (often 6.5 - 7.5 recommended).
  • Hardness: moderate to hard, well oxygenated. Serious filtration and current desired.

Decor & environment

  • Prefer fine sand or very fine gravel, as this species likes to dig and create hiding places under the decor.
  • Numerous caves, cavities, stacked rocks; stable setting as the species can move stones.
  • Moderate to strong current + good oxygenation, quieter resting areas.
  • Recommended volume: minimum 100-150 L for a couple, larger for a group or community.

AquaBota tip

If you are introducing a pair of Steatocranus casuarius, wait until the aquarium is well established, install several hiding places from the outset and avoid mixing with much faster or dominant species. Make sure you change the water regularly and use a high-performance filter, as this species appreciates very clean, oxygenated water.
