Tropheus sp. Kiriza F1 (4-5 cm)

Lively Tanganyika cichlid, “Kiriza” form – active rock-dwelling group

Tropheus sp. "Kiriza" is a cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, belonging to the “black/tail” Tropheus group found around Kiriza on the Ubwari Peninsula. This F1 line offers excellent colour expression and genetic quality.

Behavior & care

Key points:

  • Very active, territorial fish – best kept in a species tank or a dedicated Tropheus setup.
  • Should be kept in a group of at least 6–10 individuals or more to spread out aggression.
  • Requires a dense rocky layout to create territories and reduce conflicts.
A sufficiently long tank is recommended to allow swimming space and natural social interactions.

Feeding

Mainly herbivorous (algae, biofilm):

  • Provide pellets/flakes rich in spirulina.
  • Limit foods very rich in animal protein: in Tropheus, excess can cause serious digestive issues.
  • Allow some algal growth (“aufwuchs”) on the rocks for natural grazing behavior.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 23 – 26 °C
  • pH: 7.8 – 9.0 (alkaline water)
  • GH / KH: hard, calcareous water (typical of Lake Tanganyika)
  • Strong oxygenation & powerful filtration: rocky littoral zone with oxygen-rich water.

Décor & environment

Recommended layout:

  • Fine light sand or neutral gravel
  • Stacks of calcareous rocks forming caves and hiding places.
  • An open swimming area with many cracks and terraces for the Tropheus.
  • Recommended minimum volume: 200–300 L or more, depending on group size and tankmates.

Aquabota tip

For this Tropheus Kiriza line, make sure to:

  • Create a highly structured rockscape so the fish can establish clear territories.
  • Keep a sufficiently large group to diffuse aggression (avoid keeping just a pair).
  • Feed a predominantly plant-based diet and limit animal protein.
  • Provide strong aeration and regular water changes – these fish thrive in very oxygen-rich water.
