The "Blue Dempsey" form of Rocio octofasciata is a popular breeding variant with an intense metallic blue colour. It is often finer and reputed to be slightly less aggressive than the wild form.

Behaviour & care

• Moderately aggressive: requires compatible tankmates and good structure.
• Territorial, especially when mature or breeding.
• Excellent aquarium piece for intermediate to advanced aquarists.

Diet

• Omnivorous to predominantly carnivorous: quality pellets, flakes, frozen or live food (worms, artemia) to stimulate colour.
• Plant supplements are recommended to vary the diet.

Water quality

• Temperature: 22 - 28°C approx.
• pH: 7.0 - 8.0 (moderately alkaline water).
• GH / KH: moderate hardness, well filtered water, regular major changes.

Decor & environment

• Minimum recommended volume: approx. 200 L or more for an individual or small group (depending on configuration).
• Sandy or gravelly soil, plenty of hiding places: rocks, roots, caves for territories.
• Robust plants: this species can displace the decor, so prefer open, stable areas.

Introduce this fish to a well-established tank, with effective filtration and a regular water change routine (20-25% / week) to preserve its health and coloration.
