Syntripsa matanensis – Freshwater crab from Lake Matano (Sulawesi)

Syntripsa matanensis is a rare and fascinating freshwater crab native to Lake Matano in Sulawesi, Indonesia. This ancient lake, part of the Malili lake system, is home to a unique fauna of endemic shrimp, snail and crab species.

This crab is distinguished by its robust carapace, long legs and discreet behaviour. It is mainly active at night and enjoys aquariums rich in rocks and hiding places that replicate its natural habitat.

Behaviour

Syntripsa matanensis is a rather discreet and territorial crab. It spends most of its time hidden under rocks or among roots.

Feeding

This crab is omnivorous and will eat a wide variety of foods:

  • Food for crustaceans
  • Worms and small invertebrates
  • Granules for bottom-dwelling fish
  • Dried plants and leaves

Syntripsa matanensis is an interesting species for aquarists who want to keep an unusual freshwater crab. However, it requires a stable, well-designed aquarium with plenty of hiding places.

The snails are carefully packed in secure bags and placed in an insulated box with gel packs depending on the season.
