Young Amano shrimp – hardy, active and excellent algae eater
Caridina japonica, better known as the Amano shrimp (now classified as Caridina multidentata), is a very popular freshwater shrimp thanks to its efficiency against algae and overall hardiness. At 2–2.5 cm, these are young specimens that adapt easily to planted aquariums and natural aquascapes.
The Amano shrimp is a peaceful, social and very active species. It prefers to live in a group of at least 6 individuals in a well-cycled, stable aquarium. It spends its days grazing algae, biofilm and micro-organisms on leaves, roots and rocks.
Primarily herbivorous / detritivorous, Caridina japonica feeds on algae, biofilm and uneaten food.
Make sure the tank is not “too clean”: a regular supply of sinking food is recommended, especially when kept with fast fish.
Clean, stable and well-oxygenated water is essential. Absolutely avoid copper-based treatments. Before introducing the shrimp, use a shrimp-safe water conditioner.
Provide a fine substrate and plenty of natural plants to promote biofilm growth. Mosses (Java, Christmas, Weeping) and driftwood offer both shelter and grazing surfaces.
A low-intake filter or one fitted with a sponge pre-filter is recommended to avoid sucking up juveniles.
