The "Red Devil" Scalaria is a bred form of the Pterophyllum scalare, renowned for its superb red/orange colour with occasional black or dark accents. This variety is a real eye-catcher in the aquarium, but, like all scalarias, requires a suitable volume and stable water parameters.

Behaviour & maintenance

A few characteristics to be aware of:

• Relatively peaceful behaviour, but can become semi-territorial, especially in pairs or when breeding.
• Good cohabitation with calm fish of the same size or larger (avoid very small fish or shrimp which could be harassed).
• Excellent as a community or special aquarium subject but requires sufficient vertical volume for the long fins.

Diet

Omnivorous:

• Quality pellets or flakes for scalars.
• Supplements: frozen or live food (red worms, artemia) to support colour and vigour.
• Ensure a varied diet to avoid deficiencies and maintain intense red/orange colouration.

Water quality

• Temperature: 24 - 28°C
• pH: 6.5 - 7.5, sometimes up to 8, depending on conditions.
• Moderate to soft hardness, stable water quality imperative.

Decor & environment

• Recommended volume: a tank high enough to allow the long fins to express themselves.
• Tall plants, roots or driftwood, free-swimming areas and calmer areas behind or between plants.
• Avoid too strong a current or too dense a backdrop, which would interfere with the vertical swimming action typical of scalarias.
