Ornamental crayfish – striking blue claws, hardy and manageable territorial behaviour
Cherax alyciae "Blue Claw" is a freshwater crayfish from Papua New Guinea, selectively bred for its blue-tinted claws and metallic sheen. Robust and highly decorative, it is well suited to a well-structured tropical aqua-terrarium.
Cherax alyciae is territorial, especially between males, but generally remains peaceful with fast-swimming midwater fish. Provide plenty of hiding places (rocks, roots, tubes) to reduce direct interactions. A tank of at least 80 L is recommended for a pair. Avoid keeping several males together: keep 1 ♂ alone, or a harem (1 ♂ / 2 ♀) in a large volume.
An opportunistic omnivore, the Blue Claw readily accepts: sinking pellets, crustacean tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach), and small amounts of frozen foods (Artemia, mussels).
A varied diet promotes a strong shell and intense blue colouration. Avoid overfeeding, which quickly leads to pollution.
Favour clear, well-oxygenated, mineral-rich water. A crustacean-safe water conditioner helps neutralise chlorine/chloramine and supports successful moulting.
Provide a sandy substrate and numerous shelters (roots, caves, ceramic tubes). These refuges reduce conflict and make moulting safer. Hardy plants (Anubias, Microsorum, Bucephalandra) can be attached to the décor.
Moderate to subdued lighting is appreciated. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory (excellent climbers).

Provide plenty of hiding places to make moulting periods (when the crayfish is vulnerable) as stress-free as possible.
A mineral supplement (limestone rock or dedicated product) supports shell remineralisation and can help enhance the blue colour.
Crayfish are individually packed in secure insulated packaging, ensuring their safety during transport.
