Cherax peknyi (6–8 cm)

Ornamental crayfish – red/brick tones, hardy and territorial

Cherax peknyi is a freshwater crayfish from New Guinea (Papua/Indonesia). Valued for its warm colours (red, brick, sometimes marbled), it thrives in a well-structured tropical aqua-terrarium.

Behaviour and care

Cherax peknyi is territorial (especially between males), but generally peaceful with fast-swimming midwater fish. Provide plenty of hiding places (rocks, roots, tubes) so that each individual can establish its own territory. A tank of at least 80 L is recommended for a pair. Avoid keeping several males together: 1 ♂ alone, or 1 ♂ / 2 ♀ in a large, well-partitioned tank.

Feeding

An opportunistic omnivore, C. peknyi readily accepts: sinking pellets and crustacean tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach), and moderate protein supplements (Artemia, mussels, krill) 1–2× per week.
A varied diet supports a strong shell and intense colours. Avoid overfeeding (a source of pollution).

Water quality

  • Ideal temperature: 23 – 28 °C
  • pH: 6.8 – 8.0
  • GH: 8 – 15 °dGH
  • KH: 4 – 10 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 – 600 µS

Aim for clear, well-oxygenated, mineral-rich water. A crustacean-safe water conditioner helps neutralise chlorine/chloramine and supports moulting.

Décor and environment

Choose a sandy substrate that is easy to dig and varied shelters (caves, ceramic tubes, roots). These refuges reduce confrontations and make moulting safer. Hardy plants (Anubias, Microsorum, Bucephalandra) attached to the décor withstand grazing better.
Moderate to subdued lighting is appreciated. A tight-fitting lid is essential: excellent climber.

Provide ≥ 1 hiding place per crayfish + 1 extra to limit stress during moulting (a highly vulnerable phase).
A mineral supplement (limestone rock or dedicated product) promotes shell remineralisation and enhances colour intensity.
