Ornamental crayfish - bright blue with light stripes, robust but territorial
Cherax pulcher (New Guinea) is sought after for its electric blue livery, often marked with light/cream areas on the claws and cephalothorax. Solid and decorative, it thrives in a well-structured tropical aqua-terrarium.
Cherax pulcher is territorial, especially between individuals of the same sex, but generally remains peaceful with lively fish in open water. Multiply hiding places (rocks, roots, tubes) to limit direct contact. Provide an aquarium ≥ 80 L for a well-sheltered pair. Avoid several males together; possible groups 1 ♂ / 2 ♀ in large volume and compartmentalised decor.
An opportunistic omnivore, the C. pulcher accepts: runny pellets and pastilles for crustaceans, poached vegetables (courgette, spinach), moderate protein supplements (artemia, mussels, krill) 1-2×/week.
A varied diet supports the shell and theintensity of the blue. Remove leftovers to preserve water quality.
Clear, oxygenated, well mineralised water recommended. A shellfish conditioner helps neutralise chlorine/chloramines and supports moulting.
Sandy soil (they dig), various shelters (caves, ceramic tubes, roots) to secure moulting. Sturdy plants (Anubias, Microsorum, Bucephalandra) fixed to a decor are more resistant.
Moderate to subdued lighting. Lid compulsory: excellent climber.
