Ornamental crayfish — iridescent blues and pale tips on the claws
Cherax sp. "Peacock" is a selectively bred freshwater crayfish from New Guinea, prized for its iridescent blue/green tones and cream–orange tips on the claws. Hardy and highly decorative, it thrives in a well-structured tropical aqua-terrarium. Note: “Peacock” is a trade name covering several closely related lines; colouration may vary with age and from one individual to another.
The Cherax "Peacock" is territorial (especially between males) but generally peaceful with fast mid-water fish. Provide plenty of hiding places (rocks, roots, tubes) so each animal can establish its own territory. Plan for a tank ≥ 80 L for a pair, with a well-partitioned layout. Avoid keeping several males together; a group of 1 ♂ / 2 ♀ is possible in a large tank.
An opportunistic omnivore, the "Peacock" will accept: sinking pellets and crustacean tablets, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach), and moderate protein supplements (Artemia, mussel, krill) 1–2× per week.
A varied diet promotes a strong shell and intense colouration. Remove leftovers to maintain good water quality.
Clear, well-oxygenated and mineral-rich water is recommended. A crustacean-safe water conditioner helps neutralise chlorine/chloramine and supports successful moults.
Choose a sandy substrate (they like to dig) and multiple shelters (caves, ceramic tubes, roots). Hardy plants (Anubias, Microsorum, Bucephalandra) attached to the décor withstand them best.
Moderate to subdued lighting. A tight lid is essential: excellent climber.
