Cherax quadricarinatus, also known as the red claw crayfish, is a large freshwater species renowned for its hardiness and rapid growth. Adult males develop bright red markings on their claws, which are particularly impressive in an aquarium.

This species is suited to large volumes and requires a spacious, well-structured tank with plenty of hiding places. It is suitable for aquarists who already have experience with crustaceans.

Behaviour and maintenance

• Territorial towards conspecifics (especially males)
• May capture slow or weakened fish
• Twilight and nocturnal activity

Recommended to keep alone, in pairs or in groups in a very large tank with multiple hiding places to limit aggression.

Opportunistic omnivore

• Pellets for crustaceans
• Poached vegetables (courgette, carrot, spinach)
• Occasional protein supplements (shrimps, mussels, worms)

A balanced diet limits moulting problems and promotes harmonious growth.

• pH: 6.5–8.0
• GH: 8–15 °dGH
• KH: 4–10 °KH

Prefers well-oxygenated water and tolerates a relatively wide range of parameters. Sensitive to high nitrate levels.

Decor and environment

• Numerous caves and shelters (stones, roots, PVC pipes)
• Sandy substrate or fine gravel
• Robust plants only (may cut them)

Caution: species capable of moving the décor and climbing. Well-covered tank essential.
