Asolene spixi (1–2 cm)

Colourful aquarium snail, helpful against algae.

Asolene spixi, also known as the Argentinian zebra snail, is a peaceful and attractive freshwater gastropod. With its yellow shell striped with brown, it adds a natural and original touch to tropical aquascapes. It is also an excellent tank-cleaning helper.

Behaviour and care

Calm and non-aggressive, Asolene spixi can be kept with most peaceful fish and invertebrates. It spends most of its time exploring the glass, décor and substrate in search of algae and leftover food.
A minimum 30 L aquarium with a non-cutting substrate is recommended. Like all snails, it is sensitive to copper-based treatments.

Feeding

An omnivore with a herbivorous tendency, it eats green algae, biofilm and food leftovers. You can supplement its diet with sinking wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach) or spirulina-rich tablets.

Water quality

  • Ideal temperature: 22 – 28 °C
  • pH: 7.0 – 8.0
  • GH: 8 – 15 °dGH
  • KH: 4 – 10 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 – 500 µS

Calcium-rich water is essential to maintain shell strength and colour. You can enrich the water with a suitable mineralising conditioner.

Décor and environment

Choose fine sand or a neutral, non-abrasive substrate. Natural plants such as Anubias, Cryptocoryne or Bucephalandra provide excellent surfaces for biofilm and grazing.
