Lively bottom-dwelling snail eater for community aquariums
The Botia striata 4-5cm Wild (Botia striata), also known as the zebra loach, is offered in our freshwater section. It is suitable for well-equipped aquariums with community fish, good water flow and plenty of hiding places.
A lively, schooling and very active species from India (Western Ghats) that appreciates a stable aquarium with strong filtration, high oxygen levels and lots of shelters (roots, rocks, dense plants). Botia striata should be kept in a group of at least 5–6 specimens to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Provide a volume of at least 100 l (group). Use starter bacteria and check your parameters regularly with water tests.
An omnivore with a strong carnivorous tendency, this species readily accepts sinking granules, bottom-feeder tablets and frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms). It also eats small snails, making it an excellent ally in case of snail overpopulation. Vary the diet with our suitable foods to support colour and vitality. Avoid overfeeding and remove uneaten food to maintain good water quality.
Before introducing the fish, treat the water with a water conditioner. Efficient filtration with good circulation (suitable filters) and regular maintenance (maintenance equipment, weekly water changes) ensure a healthy environment. This species is sensitive to nitrite spikes and low oxygen levels.
Choose an aquarium substrate of sand or fine gravel to protect the delicate barbels. Add plenty of natural plants, roots and rocks forming caves where the group can rest. Provide quality lighting with our aquarium lighting and complete the layout with appropriate decorations to create a varied and secure environment.
