Pacific bottom catfish - hardy and suitable for community aquariums
Megalechis thoracata albinos, also known as Hoplo albinos, is a freshwater catfish native to South America. With its cream-coloured coat and red eyes, it adds an original touch to community tanks and is an excellent bottom cleaner. It is ideally suited to spacious aquamascapes or Amazonian-style tanks.
TheAlbino Hoplo is a calm, sociable and robust fish that spends most of its time searching the bottom for food. It can live in small groups (2 to 4 individuals) or alone in an aquarium of at least 120 litres. It cohabits well with other peaceful medium-sized species, but may eat small fish (neonates, fry) if they fit in its mouth.
Omnivorous and foragers, they readily accept bottom pellets, granules, worms, artemia, frozen food or specialised bottom mixes. A varied diet boosts growth and longevity.
Robust species, but appreciates well-filtered, slightly acidic water. Weekly water changes are strongly recommended.
Provide a soft substrate or Loire sand to protect its barbels. Roots, terracotta pots or stones will provide essential hiding places. They also appreciate floating plants to filter the light.

This fish is able to breathe at the surface via a modified intestine: don't be surprised if it comes up for air. During the breeding season, the male builds a nest of bubbles: offer him a quiet spot with an upturned pot or half a coconut.
