Schistura atarensis (3-4 cm)

Southeast Asian river loach: rare and elegant

Schistura atarensis (formerly known as Schistura cf. balteata) is a river loach endemic to the Ataran river basin (Myanmar/Thailand). This species lives in clear, shallow (20 cm), fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams, often between woodland and gravel.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • Territorial fish: each individual defends a small area on the bottom.
  • Best kept either alone or in a small group in a well-appointed tank, as conflicts can arise if the decor is inadequate.
  • Active on the bottom or shallows, it appreciates well-oxygenated areas and a moderate to strong current.

Diet

Omnivorous / micro-carnivorous :

  • Fine worms, micro-invertebrates, crustaceans and aquatic insects.
  • Small bottom granules or pellets, well suited to their fine mouth.
  • Occasionally, microscopic plant matter or biofilm may be consumed.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 22 - 25°C (cool water current): recommended for reproducing its biotope.
  • pH: approx. 6.5 - 7.5 (naturally clear, slightly acidic, neutral water).
  • GH / KH: low to moderate, soft to moderately hard water.
  • Moderate/strong current and good oxygenation essential.

Decor & environment

  • Ideal soil: medium to coarse gravel or coarse sand, imitating a riverbed.
  • Numerous stones, roots, branches and areas with visible current to simulate the natural habitat.
  • Plants may be present but should not be invasive; prefer open areas for swimming.
  • Recommended volume: 40-60 L minimum for a small group, with good mixing and a lid to prevent jumping.

AquaBota tip

For this species, make sure you create a visible current and rest areas. Use a "waterfall" type filter or side return pipe to create a current, and ensure excellent oxygenation. Introduce them after the tank has been well cycled, and observe their behaviour: males may sometimes show more contrasting colours or a slightly larger skull. Avoid cohabitants that are too large or too lively, which could stress the loche.
