Trichogaster lalius "Cobalt", also known as the Cobalt dwarf gourami, is a tropical freshwater fish from Southeast Asia. Its intense cobalt-blue colour and compact size make it an excellent choice for well-planted community aquariums.

Behavior & care

A peaceful but sometimes shy species, best kept in a calm tank without very boisterous or aggressive fish. Males may become territorial with each other, especially during breeding, so it is better to keep a harem (1 male with several females) or only one male per tank.

• Recommended volume: min. 60 L for a small group.
• Gentle filtration with limited current so the fish are not exhausted.
• Floating plants and shaded areas are highly recommended.

Feeding

Omnivore with a carnivorous tendency:

• Fine flakes and micro-pellets for tropical fish.
• Artemia, daphnia, bloodworms (live or frozen) in small amounts.
• Plant-based supplements (spirulina, green foods) to balance the diet.

Provide a varied diet using our foods for small tropical fish to enhance cobalt colouring and vitality.

• GH: 4 – 12 °dGH
• KH: 2 – 8 °KH
• Conductivity: 100 – 300 µS

Install a reliable heater and a low-flow filter to ensure stable, comfortable conditions.

Décor & environment

To mimic its natural habitat as closely as possible:

• Dark or natural substrate to bring out the cobalt colour.
• Dense planting with aquatic plants (stems, floating plants, mosses).
• roots and hiding places to provide secure retreats.
