Macrognathus circumcinctus is a superb spiny eel native to Southeast Asia. With its finely striped body and curious behaviour, it brings a unique touch to large aquariums. A robust and peaceful species, suitable for experienced aquarists.

1. Behaviour & maintenance

Nocturnal, calm and discreet. Best kept in a spacious tank (minimum 250 L) with a sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places. Likes to bury itself partially in the ground to rest. A tight-fitting lid is essential: an excellent jumper.

Extremely rare in captivity. Free spawning in vegetation, not observed in domestic aquariums.

Compatible with quiet medium-sized fish (Gouramis, Barbus, Botia, Synodontis). Avoid small fish or invertebrates that it may hunt at night.
