Active algae eater for community planted aquariums
Crossocheilus oblongus 3.5-4 cm(Crossocheilus oblongus), often referred to as the Siamese seaweed eater, is a very active bottom and midwater fish, prized for its ability to consume a variety of algae (including young brush algae). Our 3.5-4 cm specimens are growing juveniles; as adults they reach 12-14 cm. They are presented in our freshwater world and are suited to well-equipped, planted aquariums with a good swimming area.
A lively, peaceful but restless species, best kept in groups (5-6 individuals or more) to reduce stress and avoid overly dominant behaviour. Crossocheilus oblongus spends its time grazing on surfaces (hardy plants, roots, stones, glass) and exploring the surroundings.
Provide an aquarium of at least 120 litres for a small group, with an elongated shape, moderate current and good oxygenation. Use starter bacteria to ensure a safe start-up and check your parameters regularly with water tests. Avoid tanks that are too small or poorly decorated, where the fish will swim around in circles.
Naturally aufwuchs / algivorous, the species grazes on algae, biofilms and micro-organisms on the decor. In the aquarium, it's essential to supplement with plant foods: pellets for bottom-dwelling fish, algae wafers, "green" granules, poached vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach).
Vary the ration with our adapted foods. Feed small quantities 1-2 times a day. A hungry Crossocheilus is likely to be interested in the softest plants: it's best to make sure it never runs out of food.
Tolerant species, but appreciates well-filtered, stable, oxygenated water. Before introduction, treat the water with a water conditioner. Combine effective filtration with regular maintenance(maintenance equipment, weekly water changes). This species is sensitive to long-term peaks in nitrite and nitrate levels.
Choose a fine aquarium substrate or rounded gravel, robust natural plants (Vallisneria, Hygrophila, Microsorum, Anubias), as well as roots and rocks to increase the number of grazing surfaces.
The right aquarium lighting will allow a thin layer of natural algae to develop. Complete the décor with a few decorations to create resting and shaded areas.

To keep your Crossocheilus oblongus effective against algae, combine a sufficient group, a surface-rich decor and a quality plant food supplement.
Stability = success: monitor water quality with water tests and avoid pollution peaks that damage their health and the balance of the tank.
The fish are shipped with care in suitable isothermal packaging to ensure their safety during transport.
