Pimelodella sp. "Rio Ventuari" is an as yet unofficially described species of the genus Pimelodella, native to the Rio Ventuari basin, a tributary of the Orinoco in Venezuela. The specimens on offer currently measure around 4-5 cm. It is estimated that they could grow to around 10 cm under the right conditions.

Behaviour & care

• A discreet, peaceful bottom-dweller, although it can be shy when first introduced.
• Suitable for a well-structured aquarium with a sandy or fine gravel substrate and plenty of hiding places: ideally in groups of a few individuals to observe social behaviour.
• Beware: like many catfish, it can attack much smaller or vulnerable fish; provide companions of comparable or greater size.

Diet

• Omnivorous to carnivorous: accepts sinking pellets, small bottom pellets, frozen or live food (worms, small crustaceans) well adapted to its size.
• Feed small, regular quantities rather than large meals to preserve water quality.

Water quality

• Recommended temperature: 23-26°C (73-79°F) depending on importer.
• pH: around 6.0-7.0; stable water is preferable.
• Well-filtered water, clean substrate, shaded areas and good oxygenation essential.

Decor & environment

• Sandy soil or fine gravel; provide several hiding places (roots, tubes, hollow rocks) for the fish to rest and hide.
• Recommended volume: for a small population, a tank of 80-100 L or more is recommended to guarantee stability and space. For young fish, this will allow them to grow well.
• Moderate lighting, subdued areas and avoid currents that are too strong for this bottom-dwelling fish.

Only introduce this fish into a tank that is already well run, with stable water and plenty of refuges. As this is a rare or uncommon species, opt for gentle acclimatisation. Make sure the other fish are not too turbulent or too numerous, to limit stress. Regular water changes (around 20%/week) and careful maintenance will help to ensure your fish's good health.
