The Fantail (Carassius auratus var. Fantail) is a popular variety of goldfish, easily recognised by its veil-shaped tail and graceful swimming. It is a hardy, calm and easy-to-keep fish, perfect for family aquariums or small outdoor ponds in summer.

Behavior & care

The Fantail is a peaceful, schooling fish that enjoys living in a group of several individuals. It swims slowly and should be kept with calm companions (Oranda, Ranchu, Pom Pom, Telescope, etc.). Provide a spacious aquarium of at least 60 L per fish, with clean, well-filtered water and gentle circulation.

Feeding

As an omnivore, the Fantail eats flakes, floating pellets and fresh foods. It particularly enjoys goldfish foods rich in spirulina and carotenoids, which promote intense colours and harmonious growth. Offer several small meals a day to avoid constipation and buoyancy issues.

Before adding the fish, treat the water with a water conditioner to neutralise chlorine and heavy metals. Good oxygenation and regular maintenance ensure healthy water.

Décor & environment

Use a fine sand substrate to prevent injuries, and add hardy aquatic plants such as Anubias, Vallisneria or Cryptocoryne. Avoid sharp decorations and strong currents.
