The Shubunkin goldfish(Carassius auratus var. shubunkin) is a very popular variety of goldfish, recognisable by its multicoloured blue, red, black and silver coat. Active, hardy and sociable, they are equally at home in spacious family aquariums or outdoor ponds.

Behaviour & maintenance

The Shubunkin is a lively, peaceful and gregarious fish. It likes to live in groups of at least 2 or 3 individuals in an aquarium of at least 60 to 80 litres per fish. They are very hardy, tolerate moderate temperature variations and are particularly happy in tanks.

Like all goldfish varieties, it should not be kept in a jar.

Diet

An omnivore, the Shubunkin eats flakes, pellets, poached vegetables and live food. Varying its diet helps to boost its colour and resistance to disease.

• KH: 4 - 8 °KH
• Conductivity: 300 - 600 µS

Before use, treat the water with a suitable water conditioner to remove chlorine and heavy metals.

Decor & environment

The Shubunkin likes to swim freely and search the bottom. Use fine sand and add hardy aquatic plants such as Vallisneria, Elodea or Anubias. In ponds, provide an open swimming area and areas of shade.
