The Sarasa goldfish(Carassius auratus var. sarasa) is a superb variety of goldfish characterised by its red and white coat and its great resistance. Sociable and peaceful, it is equally at home in spacious family aquariums or outdoor ponds.

Behaviour & maintenance

The Sarasa is a calm, gregarious and curious fish. It likes to live in groups of at least 2 or 3 individuals in a well-filtered aquarium of at least 60 to 80 litres per fish. Its elegant swimming style and tolerance of low temperatures make it an excellent choice for garden ponds.

Like all goldfish varieties, it should not be kept in a jar.

Diet

An omnivore, the Sarasa accepts a wide variety of foods: flakes, pellets, poached vegetables and live foods. A varied diet helps to preserve its vibrant colours and vitality.

• Conductivity: 300 - 600 µS

Before introduction, treat the water with a suitable water conditioner to remove chlorine and heavy metals.

Decor & environment

The Sarasa likes to explore and dig in the ground. Use fine sand and hardy aquatic plants such as Vallisneria, Anubias or Elodea. In ponds, provide a shaded area and plenty of space for swimming.
