Hardy cold-water fish, ideal for beginners
The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most popular cold-water fish species. Easy to keep and very sociable, it is perfectly suited to family aquariums or small outdoor ponds.
It is a peaceful, schooling and curious fish. It enjoys living in a group (at least 2 to 3 individuals) in a spacious aquarium of at least 60 L per fish. Avoid tanks that are too small or fish bowls, which are detrimental to its well-being.
For more information on care, see our guide: Goldfish care guide.
The goldfish is omnivorous: it enjoys flakes, pellets and fresh foods. We recommend varying its diet to maintain vivid colours and good digestive health.

Before introducing the fish, treat the water with a suitable water conditioner to remove chlorine and heavy metals.
This fish likes to dig in the substrate: choose fine sand and hardy aquatic plants such as Anubias or Elodea.
Avoid very delicate plants that it could uproot.
