Fantail goldfish for cool, well-filtered freshwater aquariums
Voile (Carassius auratus var. Fantail) is a fancy goldfish variety with a double, flowing tail, bred specifically for aquariums. It is hardy but very demanding in terms of volume and filtration, and should be kept in cool, well-oxygenated water. This fish is part of our freshwater range and is best suited to properly equipped coldwater aquariums with ample swimming space.
The fantail is a peaceful, social and inquisitive fish. It should be kept with other slow, fancy goldfish types (other fantails, ryukins, etc.) rather than fast single-tailed commons/comets. It likes to root through the substrate and may uproot delicate plants.
Provide at least 80–100 litres for 1–2 fish, with more volume as they grow. The aquarium must have strong, well-oxygenated filtration, as goldfish produce a lot of waste. Avoid sudden temperature swings. Use starter bacteria when cycling the tank and monitor water values regularly with our water tests.
This is an omnivorous fish that readily accepts flakes and pellets for goldfish, as well as plant-based supplements (blanched spinach, shelled peas, cucumber slices) and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms in small quantities.
Prefer slow-sinking or sinking pellets to limit air gulping. Feed several small meals per day without overfeeding, and use our specialised foods for goldfish to support growth, colour and vitality.
Fantails are tolerant but very messy fish, requiring regular water changes and well-sized filtration. Before adding fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Pay close attention to ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, which can cause stress and fin problems.
Use a sandy or smooth gravel substrate to protect their delicate fins. Choose decorations without sharp edges, as fancy goldfish are prone to torn fins.
Cool-tolerant live plants such as Anubias, Microsorum, Vallisneria and Elodea are recommended. A moderate lighting system will show off their colours without overheating the water.
