Small dwarf snakehead for species aquariums
Channa andrao 5-7cm (Channa andrao) is offered in our freshwater section. This dwarf snakehead is hardy but territorial and is best suited to well-equipped, species-only aquariums, preferably for experienced aquarists.
A territorial species, Channa andrao is best kept as a pair or small harem. It breathes at the surface (air-breathing capabilities) and appreciates well-oxygenated water with a gentle to moderate flow. Avoid very small or slow tankmates, which may be seen as prey. Provide a volume of at least 80–100 l (pair), with many hiding places and visual barriers. The tank must be tightly covered, as these fish are excellent jumpers. Use starter bacteria and monitor your parameters regularly with water tests.
A carnivorous species that readily accepts:
Avoid using live feeder fish as a staple to limit stress and health risks. Vary the diet with our suitable foods. Feed moderately and remove uneaten food to maintain good water quality.
A slight seasonal drop in temperature (cooler in winter) is well tolerated if changes are gradual. Before introducing the fish, treat the water with a water conditioner. Efficient filtration with gentle circulation (suitable filters) and regular maintenance (maintenance equipment, weekly water changes) ensure a healthy environment.
Choose a dark aquarium substrate (sand or fine gravel) and plenty of natural plants, roots and rocks to create hiding spots. Ensure easy access to the surface for breathing. Provide quality lighting with our aquarium lighting and complete the layout with suitable decorations (caves, pots, tubes).
