Small Asian snakefish - peaceful, burrowing and suitable for planted aquariums
Macrognathus pancalus is a species of snakefish native to South Asia, appreciated for its small size, discreet behaviour and compatibility with calm community tanks. With its elongated body and pointed head, it adds an original touch to any planted aquarium or Asian aquascape.
Macrognathus pancalus is a calm, nocturnal, burrowing fish. It spends the day partly buried in the sand or hidden under decorations, becoming more active at dusk. They are gregarious and need to be kept in groups of 3 to 5 individuals to feel secure. An aquarium of at least 100 litres with a fine floor is highly recommended.
A discreet carnivore, it prefers live or frozen prey: mud worms, daphnia, artemia, tubifex, etc. It can gradually accept sinking granules, provided they are distributed on the ground. ➤ Discover our selection of groundfish foods.
Clean, well-oxygenated, slightly acidic water is ideal for this species. Avoid high turbulence and powerful filters.
This fish likes very fine, non-cutting soil, such as Loire sand. Add natural plants (Cryptocoryne, Microsorum, Anubias), roots, catappa leaves and rocks to increase the number of hiding places. Floating plants that filter the light are also very popular.
