Mastacembelus ellipsifer (18-20 cm)

African snakefish - nocturnal, discreet and original

The Mastacembelus ellipsifer is an elongated, snake-like fish native to Africa, recognisable by its body speckled with elliptical dark spots. Nocturnal and territorial, it is reserved for experienced aquarists looking for an original fish for an African biotope.

Behaviour & maintenance

Rather shy during the day and active at night, it likes to hide under roots or between stones. It requires an aquarium of at least 250 litres for one individual, with sandy soil and plenty of hiding places. It can cohabit with calm fish of a similar size but is likely to gobble up smaller companions.

Diet

Essentially carnivorous: feeds on live or frozen prey (mud worms, small fish, prawns, pieces of mussel).
Has difficulty accepting dry pellets. Night feeding is recommended.
