Polypterus bichir lapradei (40-50 cm)

Bichir "Lapradei" XXL - large West African predator

Polypterus bichir lapradei is a massive bichir native to the river basins of West Africa, such as the Niger, Senegal and Volta rivers and their tributaries. It can grow to over 70 cm in its natural habitat. The size advertised here, 40-50 cm, therefore corresponds to an already very large individual, which should only be expected in large basins.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • Benthic and nocturnal fish: active mainly in dim light or at night.
  • Opportunistic predator: any fish or invertebrate that can enter its mouth is a potential meal.
  • Only compatible with large fish or other bichirs; avoid much smaller species.
  • Use a sturdy lid: the bichir may jump out if stressed or if the light is too strong.

Diet

  • Carnivorous: baitfish of appropriate size, prawns, worms, protein-rich sinking granules.
  • Feed several times a week, without excess, to avoid biological overload and ensure good water quality.

Water quality

  • Temperature: around 24-28°C (75-82°F).
  • pH: between 6.0 and 7.8 depending on the source.
  • Very clean water, excellent filtration, good gas release at the surface (partial respiration outside the water).

Decor & environment

  • Minimum recommended volume: 500 L or much more, depending on the width and length of the tank; this 40-50 cm individual requires a larger tank.
  • Sandy soil or fine gravel, plenty of open areas for swimming, large roots or submerged branches, hiding places for retreating.
  • Moderate to subdued lighting: a dark background enhances the bichir's dark/green patterns.
  • Good width and length rather than height: this individual likes to move horizontally.

Aquabota tip

Installing a 40-50 cm bichir is not to be taken lightly:
- Make sure your tank has enough length and width, not just height.
- Check that all the companions are safe (no fish smaller than the Bichir can swallow).
- Close the tank tightly and limit bright lights: this bichir likes dark corners to feel safe.
- Change the water regularly (around 20% a week) and keep a close eye on the chemical parameters.
- A well-treated bichir can live for many years and become the main focus of your installation.
