Polypterus palmas (15-20 cm)

Bichir "palmas" - primitive West African fish, prehistoric appearance

The Polypterus palmas is a fish of the Polypteridae family, native to West Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Liberia, etc.). It has a long, cylindrical body, dorsal fins in several segments (the "finlets" typical of bichirs) and nocturnal predatory behaviour. The usual adult size is around 30-35 cm, depending on the source. The specimen offered at 15-20 cm is still young and needs a suitable tank volume to develop properly.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • Mainly nocturnal and benthic behaviour: active in the evening, discreet during the day.
  • Opportunistic predator: may attack fish small enough to enter its mouth.
  • Compatible with tank mates of sufficient size, or other bichirs of similar size.
  • Escape risk: use a lid or secure closure as it can jump.

Diet

  • Carnivore/omnivore: give preference to meaty foods (pieces of fish, prawns, worms, quality sinking pellets) and vary to avoid routine.
  • Feed in moderate quantities and make sure the food reaches the bottom or is accessible during periods of activity.

Water quality

  • Temperature: around 25 - 28°C recommended.
  • pH: generally around 6.0 - 7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline, depending on the strain).
  • Well-filtered water, sufficient volume, good air circulation at the surface (the bichir will sometimes breathe at the surface).

Decor & environment

  • Prefer sandy soil or fine gravel, with hiding places (roots, driftwood, caves) where the Bichir can rest.
  • Minimum recommended volume: for an adult, a tank of at least 300 litres with a large floor area is recommended. For a 15-20 cm juvenile, a more modest volume is possible, but don't forget the permanent tank.
  • Moderate lighting or shaded areas are appreciated. A dark background will enhance its colouring.

Aquabota tip

To breed this bichir successfully, make sure the tank is well cycled and mature before introducing it. Use a dark background, a décor with hiding places but leaving open areas, and choose companions of sufficient size not to be considered as prey. Close the tank tightly with a secure lid. Maintain regular water changes (around 20%/week) to ensure high quality water and monitor parameters regularly.
