Cherry bearded bass - a small, peaceful and colourful schooling fish for planted community tanks

The Puntius titteya(Puntius titteya), also known as Cherry Barbus, is a small cyprinid fish that is much appreciated for its orange-red hues in males and more discreet hues in females. Calm, robust and easy to feed, they are ideally suited to small to medium-sized community aquariums.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • A gregarious, peaceful schooling fish, it should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to limit stress and encourage good interaction.
  • An excellent choice for calm community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish.
  • Mainly occupies the middle of the aquarium, with incursions towards the bottom and top of the tank.

Diet

  • Omnivorous: readily accepts tropical-quality pellets, micropellets and flakes.
  • Enjoys live or frozen food supplements (artemia, daphnia, micro-worms) to stimulate colour and reproduction.
  • Can consume fine vegetable matter or spirulina as a supplement.

Water quality

  • Recommended temperature: 22 - 27°C.
  • pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral soft water).
  • Hardness: low to moderate; prefer clean, well-filtered water with few sudden changes.
  • Regular water changes (10-20%/week) are recommended to maintain good stability.

Decor & environment

  • Planted tank with shaded areas (tall, floating plants) and open spaces for swimming.
  • Dark substrate (sand or fine gravel) to enhance the red colouring of the males.
  • Minimum volume recommended: 70-80 L for a small shoal, larger if cohabiting with other species.
