Description

Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus

A rare tetra with flamboyant red hues, ideal for planted aquariums

Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus is a tetra that is still relatively uncommon in the aquarium trade, prized for its intense red colouring and natural elegance. Its name refers to its ‘flaming’ hues, which are particularly visible when the fish swim in a group within a well-planted aquarium.

A peaceful and gregarious species, this small characin is perfect for a calm community aquarium, where it will bring vitality and colour, especially when kept in a shoal.

1. Behaviour & care

The Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus is a very sociable fish that must be kept in a group of at least 8 to 10 individuals. When kept in a shoal, it displays its natural behaviour, is more active and exhibits much more intense colours.

  • Behaviour: peaceful, active, gregarious
  • Swimming zone: mid-level
  • Level: beginner to intermediate
  • Tank type: community

2. Adult size & recommended tank volume

This tetra remains small in size, making it suitable for many aquariums, provided its need to live in a group is respected.

  • Adult size: 3 to 4 cm
  • Minimum volume: 80 litres
  • Recommended front width: 60 cm minimum

3. Water parameters

Native to South America, it prefers soft, slightly acidic water with good stability.

  • Temperature: 22 to 26°C
  • pH: 5.5 to 7.0
  • Hardness: soft to slightly hard

Slightly amber-coloured water (from leaves and roots) will bring out its red colours.

4. Diet

The Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus is omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency. It readily accepts various types of food.

  • micro-pellets
  • high-quality flakes
  • frozen food (artemia, daphnia)
  • live food to enhance colouration

A varied diet helps to enhance its colours and vitality.

5. Ideal setup

A natural, planted and slightly shaded aquarium is ideal for this species.

  • Plants: dense clumps (background + sides)
  • Decor: roots, dead leaves
  • Open area: swimming space in the centre
  • Lighting: moderate

A contrast between planted areas and open space will encourage natural schooling behaviour.

6. Compatibility

A very good community fish, it coexists easily with other peaceful species.

  • Compatible: other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, small, peaceful fish
  • To avoid: aggressive or overly large fish

7. Breeding

Breeding is possible in a dedicated tank with soft, acidic water. The eggs are scattered amongst fine plants or moss.

The parents do not care for the eggs, so it is recommended to separate them after spawning.

8. Why choose Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus?

  • intense and rare red colouring
  • gregarious behaviour very attractive when kept in a school
  • Perfect for planted aquariums
  • easy to keep

9. AquaBota tips

To bring out the full potential of Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus, keep a school of at least 10 fish, maintain slightly acidic water and use a well-planted aquarium with shaded areas. A varied diet will help produce particularly vibrant colours.
